Army
Aviation Centennial
Did you know that U.S. Army Aviation has been around for over
100 years? I hadn't thought about it until this awesome army.mil site that
commemorates 100 year milestones of aviation came up on my radar. The site has
a great timeline and slide shows with pictures from different eras of Army
Aviation.
I learned a lot from that site. For instance, most all of us
know about the Wright Brother's first flight at Kittyhawk, North Carolina on
December 17, 1903. But did you know that the first American soldier to give his
life in advancing aviation as a military technology was Lieutenant Thomas
Selfridge who was killed in a test flight with Orville Wright on September 17,
1908. The Army saw the potential of aviation early on, creating the first
aviation section (part of the Signal Corps then) on July 18, 1914, and first
used aircraft in operations in Mexico chasing Poncho Villa's forces in 1916.
Military Vet Shop honors Army Aviation with designs that feature
branch insignia, crew wings, and aircraft matched with unit patches

From The Roving Historian:
Remembering the Cold War - June 13th 2012
For me, one of the frustrating things about getting older is
that what seems like ancient history to young people just happened yesterday in
my mind. But after finding a couple of videos on YouTube that have to do with
the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Cold War, I counted up the years.
Its been almost 23 years since the fall of the Iron Curtain,
and going on 24 since I left the "Fulda Gap." It did seem like yesterday, at
least until I took a look at these old clips.
I have not written much about my own military service in this
blog. I share a portion of it here, just to contribute part of my own "oral
history." I served in the 11th ACR, the Blackhorse Regiment, as an aviation
officer and scout helicopter pilot from 1985 to 1988. During those Cold War
years, the mission of the 11th Armored Cavalry was to patrol approximately 230
miles of the East German border. We linked up with the 2nd Armored Cavalry to
our south, and the British Army of the Rhine on the north. The Regiments
headquarters was based in the town of Fulda, about twenty miles from the
border.

Father's Day is Here!
Happy Father's Day to all of our friends out there! This
Father's Day, we'd like to take this opportunity to re-run an article written
by Jim about his Dad in 2008. It's Fathers and Veterans like Bob Broumley who
have made this country great!
From The Roving Historian:
MONDAY,
NOVEMBER 10, 2008
For Veterans Day
It’s
Veterans Day and I have strong opinions about it. I hate that to most people it
just means that there will be a sale down at the big box store. I come from a
family where everyone joined the army. Not because of patriotism or
nationalistic fervor. As my dad said, it’s just “what we
do.” My
service was mostly during the Cold War. My father’s was during
Korea. I like the irony that he was in at the start of the Cold War and I was
there at the end. I’m much more proud of his service than mine, so
I’ve included several photos from his album here for you to see.
The
way I look at it, every time a “great man” did something that they
teach you about in public school, there was a little guy making it happen, or
enduring the consequences depending on the outcome. Please use Veterans Day to
do two things. First, take the time to listen to veterans in your family or
those you know. Ask them what they did, where they were, and what was it like.
Record, write it down, and remember it. There are many programs going on now to
record and archive veteran’s oral histories. I have a bias for
the U.S. Army
Heritage Education Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Visit their
website and participate if you can. There are of course other programs
like the Library of Congress Veterans
History Project.
Second,
use this day to think about, and talk with your family, about our military and
how we use it. Because we employ it. The people decide how it is used. I will
not use this blog to promulgate a political debate. I want to only promote the
study, appreciation, and enjoyment of history. But please be aware that you can
and must have an opinion on how we use our military to advance our agenda
around the world as well as provide for our nation’s security. And know
that there are young people out there right now who are the instrument of our
policies. Only a precious few choose to join the military these days. We need
to use them wisely.
To
honor the veterans in my family and those that I’ve known in my life,
I’m including the text of a speech I’ll be giving at my local
Toastmasters Club tomorrow. I hope you enjoy it. And please, sometime tomorrow
go up to a veteran, shake his or her hand, and say, “Thank you for your
service.” That honor was given to me by a World War II veteran one day a
few years ago and I’ve never forgotten it. I couldn’t believe that
this man who had seen and done more than I could ever dream of would thank me
for my service. It meant the world to me.

Getting Around The Site:
Lately, we've had a few requests for catalogs as the
Military Vet Shop website is getting, well, HUGE - and it's pretty
easy to get lost in there. Unfortunately, with over 500,000 products for all
branches of service, we find it cost prohibitive to offer a catalogue.
However, we do offer several tools to assist you in viewing items online at
www.militaryvetshop.com:
1. A “Search”
function in the upper-right corner of every page that allows you to
narrow the offerings using keywords such as “army aviation” or
“m-48”
2. A
“Browse by Unit” page to allow you to search for your
unit/patch: http://www.militaryvetshop.com/byunit.html
3. A “Browse by Item”
page to allow searches for a specific item, i.e. t-shirt or mug:
http://www.militaryvetshop.com/byitem.html
4. A “Browse by Branch”
page allows you to see everything we have available for your branch of
service, merely click on Marines and you’ll see ALL items available for
US Marines with tabs at the top of the page to narrow your search to certain
items: http://www.militaryvetshop.com/bybranch.html
5. A “Browse by
Aircraft” page for our Aviators and Crew members:
http://www.militaryvetshop.com/byaircraft.html
6. A “Browse by Award”
page for Badges Earned and Branch Brass:
http://www.militaryvetshop.com/byaward.html
7. A “Browse by Ship”
page for our US Navy Veterans:
http://www.militaryvetshop.com/byship.html
8. A “Browse by
Vehicle” page for Truckers, Tankers, Strykers and more:
http://www.militaryvetshop.com/byvehicle.html
9. A “Histories”
page that features summary histories on over 30 Army units, Several
Marine Divisions, and the US Navy Aircraft Carrier Fleet:

New Units/Ships
It's been a blizzard of special requests the past couple of

The United States Navy on Military Vet Shop
It's been a LONG time coming, but we are proud to present the
first of many US Navy Designs on Military Vet Shop. Thanks to a friendly letter
from a USN Persian Gulf Veteran, we decided it was high time that we start
creating graphics for all you hard working veterans of the Navy! And since we
had to start somewhere, we began with Larry Hart's ship - the
USS
Eisenhower. We also have designs for the
USS
Enterprise and by the end of this week, we'll have the USS Lincoln.
We're also introducing something new in the Navy section that we
haven't really offered our Army and Marine veterans -
Wives and Girlfriend apparel - if it proves popular, we'll
start adding those designs to the rest of the store.
Since it takes about a week to ten days to create one of these
ships, we'll be working off of our list of requests first, then we'll go back
and catch the ones that we missed when time allows, so don't be shy - step up
and email your request if you
want to be on the "to do" list!
New Sections on Military Vet Shop this month:
2nd
ACR Combat Medic & Desert Storm with the new M113 ACAV
23rd ID (Americal) with

BISAC: History
/ Military / World War II
In the fall of 1941, as the United States Army scrambled to
prepare for the war they knew was coming, a new kind of soldier was training
with a new way of getting to the battlefield – the paratrooper. As fate
would have it, the fourth battalion of parachute infantry to be activated would
be the first to deploy to England and the first to jump into combat, while
their more celebrated airborne brothers were still training in the States. This
independent airborne unit was designated the 509th Parachute Infantry
Battalion, nicknamed the Geronimos. The paratroopers of the 509th PIB were also
known as “gingerbread men” for the figure on the unit patch they
wore.
Lieutenant Colonel Edson Raff, the first combat commander of
the Geronimos, believed that in military operations “the boldest plan is
the best.” That philosophy was demonstrated over and over again by the
509th PIB on the battlefields of World War II. Read the riveting true story of
the first American paratroopers to jump into combat during the invasion of
North Africa. Follow these same men as they parachute behind enemy lines in
Italy, hold the line against a German onslaught at Anzio, and parachute into
southern France. Stay with them until their last fight, during the Battle of
the Bulge, where only 55 men walked away.
Little has been written
about the gingerbread men in WWII. Now the 509th Parachute Infantry
Battalion’s combat chronicle is available in one source. In “The
Boldest Plan is the Best,” author Jim Broumley has skillfully crafted a
narrative of the beginnings of American airborne and the first paratroopers to
go into combat. The exploits of this “bastard battalion” are
brought to life with the voices of the veterans themselves, seventy
photographs, and seventeen original maps. Enough background on WWII is provided
for the enjoyment of a general audience, but readers of military history will
also relish this story of an often overlooked unit of elite American
paratroopers.

From our Veterans:
We love getting photos, so we can see just how GOOD you guys
look in those shirts!
:-)
Sheila
Hi
Thought we would share the shirts with you!
Thanks Again!
Subject: 1/502 in Vegas
I thought you might
enjoy seeing the entire cast from our mini-reunion (mostly) Bravo Co 1/502
(Keith is Charlie company). The photos are numbered (and there are some folks
missing from each photo)
We talked about you guys, just like you were
there (haha), and we fully intend for you to attend one of our gatherings
sometime in the future. We plan to rotate the meeting places to different
places and meet every two years. We added two to our number this year and we
had a great time. If we can do that more, we will start to make a dent in
finding some of our brothers who are in hiding. We will keep working on it! All
of us feel like we are part of the family now, so you guys stay in touch.

Mail we like:
We receive quite a bit of mail much of it, oddly enough,
angry at us because the sender somehow believes the absence of their unit patch
to be a slight on our part. I assure you, this is not the case at all.
MilitaryVetShop.com was built one
request at a time. It all started with the founder;
Jim Broumley,
wanting an 11th ACR t-shirt with his aircraft on it. Five years later, we offer
thousands of designs on over a half-million products. All of this from a very
small staff of two. That's right, there are two of us - and only one of us is a
graphic designer... that would be me. So, while we absolutely LOVE hearing from
our vets - please know that we're creating as fast as we can and we don't know
what you want until you tell us... nicely.
:-)
Sheila
Mail we don't like:
We don't like thinking that ANYONE is unhappy with one of our
products! This past week, we recieved an email from a veteran of the 3rd
Armored Division who was very unhappy with the print quality and product that
he had ordered. This is not the first time we've heard about this and we would
like to know if you feel that our provider has stepped-down the quality of our
popular
khaki hat. I would like to know what your experience with
this - or any - of our products has been, please email me with the details so I
can speak intelligently with our representative and see if we can solve any QC
issues. Send your feedback to sheila@militaryvetshop.com along
with any photos you might have and I'll see what can be done to fix the issue
once and for all.

This past month, we recieved requests from someone who wanted an
O-1 Bird Dog design for a reunion of the 221st
Aviation Company and a much-needed correction from an 11th ACR Vietnam Vet,
who set us straight - in the nicest way - on what type of
M-113s
(ACAV) they used in Vietnam. Thanks again Monte & Jim for your
letters!

New for June & July:
July 1st, 2011
To all of our subscribers: Sorry for missing the June
Newsletter, we were busy moving to our new digs here in Mechanicsburg, PA, so
Jim could be a bit closer to the
Army Heritage and
Education Center for his
research. It's a
beautiful corner of the country with lots to see and do, so we were a teeny bit
distracted last month... but now, we're back to work!

Special Requests:
We received several requests this month, but one stood out as a
unique challenge; a veteran who was part of the first campaign to Iraq in March
of 2003, who wanted "to have the logo "Creeping Death" and a picture of a skull
wearing a CVC (tank helmet) ...and maybe a tank in the background." Well, I do
like a challenge, so I present to you 3d ACR tankers, "Creeping
Death" Thank you Brian for your request!
**If anyone would like
that with another patch or vehicle, let me know.

Special Requests:
We receive many special requests - and love being able to make
that design "just right" for them, but it's rare that someone takes the time to
share their story and photos, and we can't thank them enough! We'd like to
share one story in particular. If you'll recall, we wrote about Daniel Correa's
special request briefly in our last newsletter. He had asked for Vietnam
Veteran Family designs so he and his family could surprise his father... it
worked out just as he had planned:

 |
We just returned from visiting my family after
a great weekend. As you may recall, this past weekend we joined in "Welcoming
Home" many Vietnam Veterans, after 40+ long years. It was an event filled with
remembrance, reflection, and reverence for the soldiers and families that
endured one of the hardest conflicts in our country's history. After many
years, you can still see the impact that this war has on those who served.
Expressing that they would do it again and feeling like they didn't do enough,
was a common theme that I heard.
Although my mom almost blew it, we were able to
surprise my dad with the "granddaughter" shirts. I lost count of the number of
times someone asked us where we bought our shirts. At one point I grabbed a pen
and wrote down the website on a few sheets of paper in anticipation for those
who asked. Needless to say, I ran out. One gentlemen even told me that he had
already ordered one after I had provided him the information earlier that day.
My dad also had a number of gentlemen who served in the 101st Airborne Division
approach him when they saw his shirt. It was neat to see them talk and share
about their experience.
Attached you will find a couple of pictures,
one of the entire family and then one of my dad and I. I can't thank you enough
for helping us make this a special day for him and our family. I greatly
appreciate everything you did to make this weekend even more special.
Also, here are a couple of websites that
highlight the event:

Sincerely, Daniel Correa

Customized text features. Our partners at Cafe Press have just
made available a new feature that allows us to add a "your text here" area to
our designs. Since this would require us going back through several thousand
designs and "reworking" them, we're going to make it available at this time
only to those who request it. So, if you'd like the ability to add your name to
your unit patch or one of our other designs -
email us and we'll get it posted
to the store.

New for February:

Special
Requests:
We had a special request come in that we'd never had before;
this time it wasn't for an armored vehicle, an aircraft, or a unit patch - but
for a dog! Thanks again to our friend from the
212th
MP Company - Vietnam! As dog lovers, we were more than happy to make a
design for the men and women dog handlers who served, or are serving, in one of
the Military Police Units of the U.S. Army. If you worked with these
four-legged soldiers, please take a look at our
Police Dog designs and let us know if you'd like a different
patch or text.
162nd AHC
In all the excitement about the new website, we failed to
mention that we now have four new designs for the
162nd
Aviation Company - Vietnam, whether you were a
Copperhead or a
Vulture, we've got a t-shirt for that!
1st Armored Division - M-109
Another special request: For the Desert Storm Veterans of the
1st AD, we've added an
M-109
Paladin design to our lineup - as well as a gerneric 1st AD "Army
Veteran's Wife" with the Howitzer.
New Unit
The
35th
Infanty Div - The Santa Fe Division - for veterans of
Kosovo,
Bosnia
and first responders during
Hurricane
Katrina.

New for January:
January 7th, 2011
Happy New Year Everyone!!
We're a little late getting the newsletter out this month,
because we've been doing a bit of remodeling (and you KNOW those projects
always go over budget and way past the scheduled delivery date!).
MilitaryVetShop.com now has a
whole new look and feel and hopefully is now a bit easier to navigate
whether you're inside or outside of the store itself. Here's a brief overview
of the improvements:
We hope you like the layout. We would really appreciate your
feedback - if you see a link that doesn't work, or catch us in a spelling
error, PLEASE let us know.
Thank you!
Military Vet Shop Remodel:

New Navigation:
- The new layout of Military Vet Shop is divided into four
major sections:
- Top Of The Page: Click on the graphic to go to
home [front] page of MilitaryVetShop.com from anywhere
within the shop. What's
New | Contact Us
| Special
Orders text links. All new Search feature that allows multiple
keywords to narrow your search to the exact unit, vehicle type, and product you
seek!
- Center: Just under graphics at the top of the
page, are the "Browse By" links choose to browse through our store by
Unit, Item Type, Branch, or Badge
- Content: Text links neatly laid out in
alphabetical/numerical order, search findings give a preview graphic, price and
link to other items containing that graphic.
- Footer: At the bottom of each page, there is a
sign-up form for our monthly newsletter and links to the primary sections of
the site.
- New features include:
- Quick-Pick Text Links: Click on a Unit Name
from the list of available units, and you'll get a look at everything we
have available for that particular unit arranged by graphic. Click on the
graphic you like best to see all of the products listed there. Click on a
Product Type i.e. "12oz Coffee Mug" to see every graphic available on
that particular product in Military Vet Shop. Narrow your choices using the
search box or tabs.
- Improved Search Results: Use multiple keywords to
create search phrases, such as: "1st
aviation brigade hats" to return a pageful of hats featuring designs having
only to do with the 1st Aviation Brigade and its subordinate units.
- Breadcrumbs: Never get lost again! No matter where
you find yourself in the Military Vet Shop, you've got a way back!
- Text links at the top and bottom of every page lead
to the major sections.
- Section links such as: "Military Vet Shop > All
results for "1st aviation brigade" > T-Shirts & Clothing > Hats &
Caps" follow you wherever you go and allow you to move back one page, or
many!
- Back Home Again: Simply click on the header graphic
of any page to go back to our main page.

Like What You See?
We hope you find the new features and navigation
easier to use and sincerely hope this allows you to more easily move about the
store, because we have some really cool new products available and even more on
the way! One of the newest features in our store is the social networking links
- those cute little buttons to the right of each product that allow you to
share your favorite product with all your friends on facebook - or easily drop
some not-so-subtle hints to family.

What's Next?
More Branches of the Armed Forces: In the coming
months, we plan on introducing a full line of Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and
Marine designs with all-new photorealistic ships, aircraft, armored and ground
vehicles.
More products to choose from: We've got more
products emblazoned with your unit patch and choice of aircraft or vehicle, to
include our new line of Thermos products, iPhone and iPad
covers, cozy stadium blankets, and more! Soon, you'll see an even greater
selection of existing and new unit patches on these new products. Keep on top
of the new offerings by signing up for our monthly newsletter.
